Efficacy of a Chlorine Dioxide-containing Mouthrinse in Oral Malodor, J. Frascella et al, TKL Research, Inc., Paramus, NJ, Journal of Dental Research, , (IADR Abstracts) 1999, p. 356, Article 2004, (submitted for publication in its entirety)

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of CloSYSII Oral Rinse in reducing oral malodor over a 96 hour period. The subjects were assigned either a 30 second rinsing with CloSYSII Oral Rinse or distilled water. Evaluations were assessed by a hedonic panel and with a sulfide monitor (Halimeter, Interscan Corp.). VSC levels were taken at baseline and at 2, 4, 8, 24 and 96 hours post-treatment.

There was no statistically significant difference between groups at baseline. The mean odor pleasantness improved from baseline to 2 hours post-rinse in the chlorine dioxide group compared with the placebo at 2 hours. The between group difference in odor pleasantness was statistically significant at 2 hours (p<0.01), 4 hours (p=0.01), and 8 hours (p<0.01) post-rinse. The mean odor pleasantness in the CloSYSII Oral Rinse (administered in its unflavored form) group reached its maximum level, indicating the greatest increase in odor pleasantness at 8 hours post-rinse.

Odor intensity scores showed no statistical significance at baseline between groups. Odor intensity improved from baseline to 2 hours in the CloSYSII group compared with the placebo. The between group difference in odor intensity in the chlorine dioxide group was statistically significant at 2 hours (p<0.01), 4 hours (p=0.02), and 8 hours (p<0.01) post-rinse. The odor intensity reached it minimum at 8 hours post-rinse.

Conclusion: This study employed serial organoleptic and Halimeter measurements to document the duration of action CloSYSII Oral Rinse on oral malodor. The results show that a single 15-mL rinsing with the chlorine dioxide rinse, in its unflavored form, improves breath odor pleasantness, reduces breath malodor, and reduces VSC concentrations in the mouth through 8 hours after use.
